ASHBURTON R.C.

GOOD DAY FOR WASHDYKE The Ashburton County Racing Club’s good fortune in regard to weather was again in evidence on Saturday, when the boisterous rain storms of mid-week gave place to mild and calm conditions. There was a threat of further rain during the afternoon, but no more than a very light shower was experienced. The track had dried rapidly under the influence of sun and wind, and while the going was dead, it was never really heavy. The star performer of the day was Water Power, who achieved the two principal events, one over a mile and a quarter and the other at six furlongs. In each case the Washdyke mare, ridden by .the apprentice, E. A. Leckie, came from the rear and cut down the leaders in convincing fashion, and she promises this winter to excel any of her previous performances. Other winners from Washdyke were Eigindale and Adsum, and the day was a profitable one for the South Canterbury visitors. The attendance was moderate, and the totalisator, operating on the 75-25 single pool system, handled only £5430 for the seven races, against £7672 last May when win and place was in vogue. Owing to the Club’s usual official, Mr A. J. Hastings, being engaged at the Wellington trotting meeting, Mr R. E. Hatch, of Awapuni, acted as starter for the day.
