IRRIGATION SURVEY GOOD PROGRESS MADE Excellent progress has been made with the survey for irrigation purposes of certain areas in the Levels and Geraldine counties. The topographical mapping of the land has been completed over an area of the flat portion of the Levels county. Interviewed by a “Timaru Herald” reporter on Saturday, Mr T. G. Beck, the Public Works irrigation engineer who is supervising the survey, said that soil moisture was very uniform and free from minor depressions, and while more pronounced towards the Opihi River, had not presented any serious difficulty. A study would now be made of the information already obtained so as to ascertain the most satisfactory method of approach in the diversions of water problems. Research of the strength of flow in the Opihi and its tributaries would be commenced shortly. DAMAGE BY RATS. At last week's meeting of the Temuka Borough Council the authenticity of the report that rats from the borough rubbish dump had established themselves in the north end area of the town was doubted, one councillor remarking that the report was a fable. That the rats are there, and in large numbers, can be gathered by a tour cf inspection of certain north end properties where the rodents, in spite of the precautions of residents, are causing a great deal of trouble. A resident of Dyson Street informed a “Timaru Herald” reporter on Saturday that during the last fortnight the outhouses on his property had become undermined by the rats. The fact that his 12 pullets had apparently ceased laying first revealed the presence of the unwelcome visitors which, on a watch being made, were seen tc come from their burrow whenever a bird left a nest and carry off the egg by rolling it to their retreat. One of the rats caught measured 18 inches from tip to tail. At a Birkett Street residence, 50 rats were accounted for in one day, while a large number have been seen at the rear of business premises in King Street. FRIENDLY FRIDAYS.
