HUMOUR IN HATS

OLD FASHIONS REVIVED. No doubt the fashion shows have revealed some extraordinary examples in millinery, but the funny pill-box, pork-pie and pie-crust shapes are all possible if poised on a smart head. The berets, both in their dressy and their sporting character, are mostly very becoming, though not too easy to keep tidy when worn on the slant. The cloche in its new variety is one of the best selections of the moment, and in the new light felts or rich velours the autumnal colours are lovely. Brown, rust, chocolate, green and wine tones are all good, with tweeds to harmonise. For country the Homburg idea is still favoured; also the cowboy shape in felt is smart. The newest fabric and tweed hats have a full loose crown with stiffened stitched brim and a petersham ribbon or metal band. Some crowns show self-coloured wool embroidery. Felt is the lightest wear for early autumn, and the smartest for travel. Jockey peaked caps are smart on neat, small heads; so are the newest

tam-o’-shanters with a skilfully adjusted veil. In choosing millinery do not forget that winter gales are ahead, and fly-away veils and bows are not good for cruises or race meeting.
