PRODUCER AND VENDOR
NEED FOR FIXING OF MILK PRICES The opinion that the time had arrived in South Canterbury when milk should be fixed at a price suitable to both producer and consumer, was expressed to a representative of “The Timaru Herald” yesterday, by Mr D. Griffin, of Timaru, who has just returned from a visit to Australia. Mr Griffin, who took particular interest in the affairs of the dairymen of Australia, pointed out that there the retail value of milk was about 6d a quart, and the producer received up to 1/- a gallon. In Wellington, with the Municipal supply, the producer received about lOld a gallon, while In Timaru the average price a gallon to the producer was between 5d and 6d. In Wellington he had found that the better the milk the better the price. “My sympathies are entirely with the producer,” said Mr Griffin, “and after what I have seen in some of the principal centres of the Commonwealth, I am definitely of opinion that he should receive far more consideration in this district.”
