WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
TYCHO. At the monthly meeting of the Tycho Women’s Institute, Mrs C. Stewart presided over a good attendance of members and Rosewill visitors. Preliminary arrangements were discussed for the birthday party. After other business had been dealt with, demonstrations by Mrs McLeod (breadmaking), Mrs L. G. Smith (handkerchiefs) and Miss M. Morrison (knitted scarf) were keenly followed, and much enjoyed. An exhibition of old articles was held, this proving most interesting. Competitions resulted: —Apple jelly, Mrs Smith and Mrs McPherson 1, Mrs Morrison and Miss M. Morrison 2, Mrs P. Talbot and Mrs White 3. Jar autumn leaves, Miss N. McLeod 1, Mrs A. Marshall 2, Mrs McPhedran 3. Knitted article from 2oz wool. Mis Marshall senr. 1. Mrs McPhedran 2, Miss M. Morrison 3. Miss M. McPhedran brought the premier bloom for the month (clematis) . The hostesses were Mrs F. Armstrong, Mrs P. Armstrong and Miss D. Barbour. ORARI. The monthly meeting of the Orari Women’s Institute was held on Thursday. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mrs Worner, Mrs Williams and Mrs O’Brien in their recent bereavement. A vote of thanks was passed to the girls who sold poppies on Anzac Day. It was decided to hold a special meeting to go through the remits to I e brought forward at the annual conference in Wellington in July. A very interesting demonstration of barbolo work was given by Mrs Firman, of Geraldine. The competition resulted—the best bloom in my garden. Mrs W. Hughes 1. Mrs F. Hughes 2, Miss S. Grimsy 3, raffia basket, Mrs Bennett and Mrs Johnstone equal 1; best ironed article Mrs Brenton 1, Mrs F. Priddle 2, Mrs L. Cone 3. Afternoon tea was then dispensed the hostesses being Mesdames T. Austin, D. Bennett, Misses M. Barker, J, Austin, J. Bennett, G. Brown.
