ST. JOHN’S CHURCH ANNUAL MEETING OF PARISLIIONERS The annual meeting of parishioners of St. John’s Church, Winchester, was held on Thursday evening. The Vicar, the Rev. C, L. Mountfort, presided over a good attendance. Annual Report. Mr L. H. Orbell (Warden) presented the annual report and balancesheet, the latter revealing a credit of £l3l/10/-. The report stated that the attendance at church services throughout the year had very considerably improved, notwithstanding the fact that the Waihi School boys were absent for many Sundays during the period under review. Nut only had the attendance increased, but the general offertories showed an increase of £5/19/10, and the special offertories an increase of £l/14/3, The Sunday School concert held in April 1933 was a marked success. Those responsible for the success were Mrs J. Deßenzy, assisted by the teachers of the Sunday School, and Mr J. L. Stone-Wigg who arranged a play by the Waihi School boys. The euchre socials during last winter were well attended, the net proceeds showing an increase over the previous year of £6/14/6. The Ladies’ Guild without any difficulty raised its annual quota of £ls for the Board of Missions. The thanks of parishioners were due to the members of the Guild for their splendid effort. A new organisation was instituted during the year, in the form of a Mite Society. Since last July this organisation had contributed £l6/18/6. Without the aid of the Mite Society, St. John’s would have great difficulty in maintaining the annual quota of £9O to the parish general fund. Thanks were due to the collectors, Misses Doreen Opie, Dora Deßenzy, .Dorothy, Isabel and Kathleen Trumper. The visit of the Church Army Column in September was much appreciated by all the parishioners. The services conducted by Captain Kernick, being very well attended. The annual Sunday School picnic was held in the Temuka Domain or. December 9 and was well attended. The annual gift auction was held in May and was a success. During the evening the Sunday School prizes were presented by Mr T. D. Burnett, who afterwards addressed the children. Praise was due to Miss Moore, superintendent of the Sunday School, a position she has held for more than 30 years, and to all the teaehers who had given their time to teaching the children. During the year four old parishioners had passed away—Mr Cyril Unwin, who for some time was choirmaster at St. John’s, Mr C. W. Gimson, Mrs Sarah Ann Grant and Mrs Agnes Jessie Steven were well-known and respected parishioners during the years 18801890. Many who were in our midst to-day would remember these old parishioners, and sympathy was extended to the relatives. Vicar’s Remarks. The Vicar congratulated the vestrymen on the year’s showing. It was remarkable what, they had done. At the St. Peter’s (Temuka) annual meetingfavourable comment had been made in regard to the flourishing state of St. John’s. Mr Mountfort said that now the parish had a curate assisting they were able to do more visiting. In times of sickness he and Mr Harper would be pleased if parishioners would give a ring on the ’phone and one of them would come up. The vicar said he fully appreciated the work of the layreaders (Messrs J. L. Stone-Wigg, J. E. Trimen and L. H. Orbell). He also paid a tribute to Miss Moore’s long service as superintendent of the Sunday School and also thanked the teachers. He eulogised the work of Mr Orbell. Churchwarden, who had done so much at this end of the parish. He thanked Miss Moore for attending to the altar vases which was her work of loving ministration. He also thanked the parishioners for what they had done for the church. He hoped they would all pull together and help again this year. Mr Mountfort said he would like to see more of the old fashioned custom of whole families coming to church together as their forefathers did. Election of Officers. The following officers \ ere elected: Parishioners warden, Mr L. H. Orbell; vestrymen, Messrs J. L. Stone-Wigg, JE. Trimen, D. Louden, W. Bradshaw, P. Surridge, A, G. Kimber, J. Philp, R. E. Smith. The vicar thanked the donors of produce etc., for the gift auction; Mr T. H. Langford (auditor); Mrs W. J. Moore (organist); Miss Doreen Opie (assistant organist); Mrs P. Surridge (caretaker) and Mrs J Deßenzy (choir). Mr Orbell thanked Messrs J. Philp, H. A. x-nilp, P. Surridge and A. Kimber for carting the produce and Messrs T. Harrison and R. Maddren for use of conveyances. Sunday School Trizc List. After the annual meeting the children of the St. John’s Sunday School were presented with their prizes by Mr Mountfort. The prize list was os under: Miss J. Trimen’s class— Ronald Niles 1, Arnold Knight 2, Leslie Toomey, Colin Russell, Henry Hopkins, Murray Scott, Hamel Reilly. Miss P. Deßenzy and Miss D. Trumper’s class —Mervyn Niles 1, Douglas Surridge 2, Francis Knight 3, Kennth Trumper, Tom Bill, lan Langford, Gilmore Stephens, Murray Jackson, Dick Deßenzy, Francis Russell, Geoffrey Reilly. Girls: Eileen Deßenzy 1, Helen Deßenzy 2, Nola Gudsell 3, Mavis McClelland, Shirley Greenall, Doreen Smith, Margaret Smith, Cissie Scott. Miss D. Deßenzy and Miss I. Trumper’s class —Girls: Betty Toomey 1, Mary Hopkins 2, Daphne Knight 3, Joyce Trumper, Marion Knight, Wilma Kenny, Beryl Stephens, Winnie McClelland, Lois Gudsell, Pearl Russeil, Brenda Trumper, Valerie Greenall, Shirley Bailes, Pearl Reilly, Merle Wilks, Audrey Priest. Boys: Dick Paterson 1, Robert Paterson 2, Hector Trumper 3, Malcolm Bisdee, Erie McClelland, Leyland Gudsell, Tom Greenall, Allan Reilly, Nicholas Russell, Alan Scott, Murray Ashton, Trevor Greenall. Miss Kingston’s special prize was won by Joan Currie, and Francis won Miss D. Trumper’s prize. After supper, a gift auction was held, Mr A. C. Palmer was auctioneer, for which he was accorded a vote of thanks.
