SHERWOOD DOWNS
SUCCESSFUL BALL. The Sherwood Downs Women’s Institute held its annual ball in Mr S. P. Bray’s granary on Thursday night. In spite of the cold southerly weather, more than 200 persons were present. In a short speech, the president of the Institute (Mrs A. Mackenzie) said that special thanks were due to Mr and Mrs S. P. Bray and family both for the use of the granary and the work they had done towards the success of the ball. The winners of the various competitions were—Monte Carlo, Mr S. Wood and Miss W. Dick; lucky spot, Mr W. Bray and Miss Morrison; cake guessing competition, Mrs Travers; lucky hats, Miss I. Johnstone and Mr S. Harper. The granary was artistically decorated. The enjoyment of the evening was added to by an issue of fancy paper hats. GENERAL NEWS. Unsettled weather has been experienced for some time. A cold southerly change on Thursday left a coating of snow on the hills. The wet weather has hindered threshing, and the mill has experienced difficulty in making its round of the district. Apart from the stacks being too wet to thresh, soft paddocks have caused bogging and the use of the wire rope.
