MILLION HOUSES
AMBITIOUS SCHEME IN BRITAIN. British Official Wireless (Received May 18, 7.30 p.m.) RUGBY, May 17. A scheme involving the expenditure of £400,000,000 for the provision of • million houses, at annual rentals not exceeding 10/- weekly, is recommended in the interim report by the National Housing Committee, of which Lord Amulree is chairman. The creation under the Ministry of Health, of a National Housing Commission, is proposed with power to raise money to finance the housing programmes ia particular, by the issue of national housing stock. Local authorities or public utility societies would own and manage the houses. It is recommended also that one of the duties of the Commission should be the stimulating of the formation of these societies, and the creation of a central council to exercise general control over the societies.
