SPEECH CRITICISED
“MILITARISTIC AND PESSIMISTIC” By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, May 17. The president of the Auckland branch of the League of Nations, at the branch luncheon to-day, strongly criticised the recent public utterances of Rear-Admiral Burges Watson. “I have never seen a plea for armaments put on a cruder or a lower basis,” said the president, Mr Willis Airey. “The whole tenor of the speech was militaristic and pessimistic, and bolstered up the idea that war was coming and we must be prepared for it. It is extraordinary that the educational authorities should permit such statements to be made in a country which is a member of the League. We should do all that we can to counteract that form of propaganda.”
