ALEXANDRA SQUARE.

To the Editor ol " The Timaru Herald " Sir, —I see in the curator’s report to the Council, that he has in mind a scheme to prevent the public of the South End making free use of Alexandra Square. I think the same curator should take a visit to Christchurch, and see how the council there treat the public. The council supervise the work, not the curator, in that fair city. I remember not long ago some iron hoops were placed across the track to prevent the people making use of same, and the boys used to make hurdles or them. If we had a good strong council, with proper civic pride in their town, they would see to several things. For instance the restriction of the thistle at the Burn’s Memorial, the restoration of the ribbon border that was such a beauty spot in the Gardens, leading down to the Tea Kiosk. If the council erects a fence along Alexandra Square, they will find the public either getting under or over it, and still maintaining their right to use the Square. With regard to the paths breaking the mower, I would say that the man that works the mower, could easily follow the tracks, and not cut across them. I can remember when these same paths were dug up and left rough, so as to annoy the public, but in the end the people won out. My advice to the curator is to make good pathways like there are in other squares and leave the things that are done in the old country alone. —I am, etc., SOUTHENDER. Timaru, May 17.
