RUGBY MATCHES YESTERDAY’S RESULTS The second round in the Waimate Rugby Sub-Union’s competitions was played at Manchester Park yesterday afternoon, when the attendance was materially affected by the cold boisterous weather. In the senior competition Marist met Old Boys and a fast even game resulted in a draw, which indicated the merits of the respective teams. The contest between Huimai and Southern found combination the deciding factor. Huimai backs always looked dangerous when properly under way, but Southern players included many recruits to the senior ranks, and the exhibition given was most promising. Southern v. Huimai. Southern won the toss and a series of short kicks took them deep into Huimai territory. Cumming was caught in possession and threw back to Heath, who missed his pass, but recovered the ball and transferred to W. Lundy, who lined about 15 yards from his own line. W. Lunday sent Bartlett away, all the Huimai backs handled, play going past half way, but Sole headed a Southern rush. back to the Black 25. Play travelled up and down field Southern having the advantage of the wind, till Cumming intercepted a long pass and beat several men. He was unsupported and his kick was put into touch by Sole. Using the wind Mahan and Brice put in very useful work for Southern, but Huimai backs took play past half way and Wyndham secured and his kick beat McNiell. Fraser dashed up and touched down between the posts. Cumming converted. Huimai 5. Southern 0. Southern immediately went on attack, Geddes,K. Wright and Mahan being prominent and the Blue backs took part in a bright bout of passing which ended in G. Wright going over for a try in a handy position. K. Wright missed with the kick. Huimai 5, Southern 3. Huimai then assumed the offensive and W. Lundy sent on to Bartlett who transferred to Davis, who cleverly beat two opponents, but sent a rather weak pass to L. Lundy, and the ball went over for Southern to force. The spell ended without further score. On resuming Southern set up an attack, and R. Lundy, who had gone up to half-back, sent Fraser away, but the latter’s pass went astray and Cumming’s kick through w r as brought back owing to an infringement. G. Wright was twice responsible for good solo work, but the Huimai backs got into action, Wyndham fielding a long kick and sending on to Cumming, to R. Lundy, whose short kick over the line was touched down for a force. Shortly afterwards a great passing movement saw R. Lundy send Bartlett away from a scrum, and the ball went to Davis, to W. Lundy, to N. Cumming, who lost the ball. W. Lundy came round and sent on to A. Cumming, who ran over for a try in the corner. N. Cummings’ kick failed. Huimai 8, Southern 3. A few minutes later R. Lundy twice broke away from the scrum, being grassed unsupported on the line on the second occasion. The Blacks kept play near the Southern line and were nearly over from a passing movement. From a ruck the ball was kicked to R. Lundy, who dived over in a good position. N. Cumming failed with the kick. Huimai 11, Southern 3. Play gradually worked to near the Southern line in a series of lineout until G. Wright broke through and kicked to past half-way where play settled for some time until Lundy Brothers, Bartlett and Wesley broke away in a passing rush, R. Lund’s short kick going over the line for a force. A moment later the movement was repeated with a similar result, but at the third attempt Harper, following up fast, whipped over to score between the posts. N. Cumming converted and time was called with the scores: Huimai 16, Southern 3. Mr F. Mcßride was referee. Marist v. Old Boys. A “Herald” representative was yesterday informed by a farmer residing at Hunter that while cattle were being mustered on his property the progress of the operation was stopped owing to rifle bullets being fired across the track not far from his homestead. A detour was made in order to come up in the rear of the shooters, and it was found that they were whiling away the time by trying to fell a broadleaf tree growing on the opposite side of a gully from that on which they had pitched a temporary camp. Having given the order to “cease fire” the farmer, who did not trouble to obtain the names of the shooters, proceeded to his homestead and found his cattle tally to be short. A search of the property revealed the fact that two bullocks were dead from bullet wounds. A return visit was made to the camp of the riflemen, but they had in the meantime taken their departure.
