WAPITI AND RED DEER
CROSSING SAID TO BE TAKING PLACE. By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, April 12. Two Wairarapa sportsmen, Messrs A. and K. Sutherland, have just concluded a remarkably successful Wapiti stalking expendition in the Lake *1 e Anau district, Mr A. Sutherland bagging three on the northern arm of the lake, and his brother one on the middle arm. While Mr A. Sutherland speak-s in most glowing terms of the Wapiti in the block he worked, his brother made a disquieting discovery concerning the herds on the middle arm which, he found, were crossing with the red deer and he was of the opinion that unless they were culled out irreparable harm would be done in that block. Mr Sutherland added: “I found that all the Wapiti are crossing with the red deer, and out of 25 I saw, the one that I shot (a bull) and a cow, were the only pure types. There is a serious danger of tt\e herd being ruined. The crossbred is a very miserable animal. It is as big as a Wapiti, but it has a very poor head."
