TOLL OF CYCLONE
SEVENTY-TWO LIVES LOST. WIDE AREA DEVASTATED. United Press Association—By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright (Received March 16, 10.40 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 16. A Cairns message states that the latest survey shows that 72 persons have perished, as a result of the luggers and launches being overwhelmed. In the cyclone on Monday. Stories are arriving of the ruination of farms in the far north beyond Cooktown. Banana plantations were completely demolished and every building was wrecked. Five settlers at Almason were absolutely ruined. The sea rose to a height of 30 feet, compelling them to seek safety on higher ground.
