WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
ALLANDALE It was a glorious day on which the members of the Allandale Women’s Institute held their second New Year picnic. Mrs Carter of “Te Puni,” Clayton, had offered her grounds as the picnic place and it proved (as last year) an ideal spot and a great success. After lunch, a short meeting was held in the summer house and in the absence of the president. Mrs J. O’Neill, Mrs A. Hall presided. It was arranged that & plain jam sponge sandwich be one of the competitions for the February meeting. During the afternoon, games were played and most of the children, as well as several adults, enjoyed a swim in the river. Prize winners in the “ring and lucky ticket” game were: —Girls under 7 Mnrie O’Neill; girls under 11—Noeline Wareing; girls under 16—Gladys Hall. Boys under 7—Allan White; boys under 11—Kevin O’Connor; boys under 16—Ron Sadler. Women —Mrs Alister Mackenzie. Men —Mr W. White. Afternoon tea was then served and much enjoyed, after which Mrs Hall apologised for the absence of Mrs O’Neill and on behalf of the members offered to Mr and Mrs Carter grateful thanks for their kind invitation and help, in having the water boiling for the tea in time for both meals. She also welcomed the visitors and thanked all who had made the picnic such a happy one. Apologies were received from Mrs West and several members who were on holiday or unable to be present. Mrs Carter replied, saying how much pleasure she had in having the picnic there and offered her home again for next year. After Mr J. O’Connor had thanked the members for the invitation on behalf of the menfolk, the picnic gradually broke up, everyone having thoroughly enjoyed their day’s outing.
