NOTES ON THE RACING

Special to " Die Herald " DUNEDIN, December 26. Though windy, the weather was fine for the first day of the Dunedin meeting, and the gate receipts were £9O more than on last Boxing Day, with a corresponding Increase in the totalisator business. A feature of the day was the success of the Riccarton contingent, which won six races and was (econd in the other two, while Ric-

carton jockeys won six times. Washdyke accounted for the principal event with Locksley, and Wingatui had to be content with the two-year-old race. Backers Astray. Backers displayed a preference for Rasoule and Gallivanter in the Otokia Hurdles. Rameses fell at the first jump and Gallivanter at the next. Rasoule and Fleeting Glance each hit a hurdle, and Polling Day did likewise at the final obstacle. In a good race from the last jump, Rational 11., ridden by J. Wilker, secured the verdict by a head from Fleeting Glance, who beat Don Jose by the same margin. Polling Day was fourth two lengths back. Fleeting Glance was making her first appearance as a jumper, and would probably have won but for the one mistake she made. Won With Something in Hand. There were three well backed candidates for the Trial Stakes—Lady Zephyr, Quite Soon and Sungem. Norman Conquest made the running from Granada, Daring Deed and Lady Zephyr, but at the distance Lady Zephyr took charge and won with a bit in reserve by a length from Daring Deed, who was the same distance ahead of Silver Sight. Norman Conquest was close up fourth, followed by Granado, Impala and Quite Soon. The Juveniles. i Invoice was nearly twice as well backed as Queen of Song on the win machine in the two-year-old race, but there were only 40 units between them in the place betting. Queen of Song was first to Jump away, but was soon joined by Cupbearer and the pair turned for home three lengths ahead of Invoice. Queen of Song drew away in the straight and won by a length and a half from Invoice, who beat the tiring Cupbearer by four lengths. Disguise and Pompeii were the same distance further back. An Impressive Display. The Riccarton filly Gaysome was a considerably better favourite than Irish Lancer and Fair Weather in the Federal Handicap. Fair Weather was first to show out, but was soon joined by Royal Sceptre. Going to the far turn the leaders were Royal Sceptre, Gaysome and Fair Weather, and these three led to the straight from Kerbside and Irish Lancer. Gaysome ran up to Royal Sceptre a furlong from home and, confidently ridden, won by a length from Kerbside, who finished fast on the rails and beat Royal Sceptre by a neck. Irish Lancer, Fair Weather and Meadow Lark were together two lengths further back, Gaysome won very impressively at her first attempt in open company. Mobile and Hula Belle both ran badly. By a Neck. With A. Eastwood up, Cough (558438) was preferred to Argentic (496409) for the Otago Handicap, there being a drop in the figures to Some Shamble (262-341). Sailing Home, Argentic and Worship were quickest to begin, and at the mile post the leaders were Worship, Some Shamble, Sailing Home and Argentic. Some Shamble led past the six furlongs post from Worship, Sailing Home and Argentic, and the four were still in front going to the far turn, where the field was closing up. Some Shamble led round the top just clear of Argentic, Cough and Worship, but at the home turn Worship lost his place. Some Shamble was first into the straight from Argentic and Cough, with Blazer and Salmo Salar moving up. Then Locksley made a run and a furlong from home he challenged Some Shamble and after a good race beat him by a neck. Cough was more than two lengths away just beating Worship, who came on again at the finish. The next three were Argentic, Salmo Salar and Sailing Home. Locksley has been a good stake earner since B. Brodie took him in hand, and looks like going on to better things. He was last going down the back, but travelled fast over the last two furlongs. Vintage Adds Another. Vintage, who had run away with the High Weight Handicap at the Hororata meeting, was at odds on both machines for the Salisbury Handicap, with Kemal Pasha second selection. Trivet, Kemal Pasha, Amy Johnson, Cleaner, Bold Brigand and Last Link were the smartest to begin, and at the far turn Kemal Pasha, Amy Johnson, Last Link, Bold Brigand and Trivet were still in the front division. Vintage was running about eighth. At the top First Song made a move and at the home turn the first three were Kemal Pasha, Amy Johnson and First Song, with Last Link and Trivet also prominent. When the straight was reached Vintage was sent along, and coming through on the rails he won by two lengths from Cleaner, who finished fast and took second money by two lengths from Last Link, who narrowly defeated Amy Johnson and Doiran. So far Vintage has not been out of a place, and has won three races in five starts. One For Southland. Grand Finale, Niggerhead and The Masquerader disputed favouritism in the Burnside Handicap. Niggerhead and Grand Finale were first to show out, but were quickly supplanted by The Masquerader and Chief Light, who led the other pair to the far turn and round the top. Chief Light was in front when the straight was reached, and in a good finish won by a neck from Niggerhead, who beat The Masquerader by a short half length. Grand Finale was fourth and Royal Duke next. Chief Light was the first horse to carry Mr W. T. Hazlett’s colours since the Southland owner’s return from Victoria, and gave A. Messervy his third win for the day. Final Shot Prevails. Final Shot and Silver Jest dominated the betting on the Milburn Handicap. Gold Paper, Moneygran and Repudiation began best and at the far turn they were attended by Cherry Queen and Silver Jest. Moneygran led Cherry Queen. Repudiation and Gold Paper across the top, with Silver Jest leading the rest, but at the distance Repudiation looked a winner. Then Final Shot, who had been buried in the ruck, flashed up on the outside and beat Repudiation by a length. Moneygran was another length away, with Silver Jest. Cherry Queen and Roland next. Final Shot was the third winner turned out during the day by Mrs J. Campbell, and all were ridden by A. Eastwood.
