ATTEMPTED FRAUD
CHINESE COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON. December 13. Joe Hoe (45), a Chinaman, pleaded guilty to-c .' to attempting to obtain £l5O by false pretences from a Palmerston North bookmaker named Williams. The method adopted was explained by the posting of a letter by Hoe to himself at Wellington, with the address only lightly pencilled. This he rubt d oil after delivery, and he readdressed the envelope to the bookmaker, went up to Palmerston, and used the envelope to post bets, after hearing the result of the first race at Trcnthnm. The fact of the envelope bearing both the Wellington and Palmerston cancellations. however, caused the bookmaker to query it. Hoc was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
