GERALDINE

SUMMER BLOOMS A SPLENDID DISPLAY During the last fortnight the display of roses and summer blooms at the Little Park and the Geraldine Domain have attracted much attention, and both residents and visitors have commented favourably on the choice array of flowers. At the Little Park a beautiful display of roses greets the eye, Mrs Hugh Dickson, Columbia, and Sun Star, being among the varieties flowering. The standards include Red Letter Day, Shot Silk, and Los Angeles. Pennet, a red standard rose, which is in the central plot, shows a prolific mass of bloom, more than 100 growing on the one tree. Mrs Herbert Stevens proved the best of the white variety, and is at present a mass of pure white blooms. Madame Abel Chutney, a large pink rose, is also showing to perfection. The Lady Hillington, a climbing red, also makes an attractive display.

In commenting on the display the curator (.Mr H. Coombs) remarked that several visitors from Christchurch and Timaru had remarked on the display. the large size of several varieties of the roses arousing much admiration. Mr Coombs added that visitors had said that the same varieties were growing elsewhere, but they were not so large. No doubt the secret of his success lay in the fact that his treatment of the soil had proved ideal for the varieties mentioned.

In the Domain proper the blaze of colour makes a striking picture from the entrance gates. Near the gates a cluster of blue delphiniums and crimson and red antirrhinums, the latter being of exceptional size, attract the eye. In another plot eighteen colours of Iceland poppies make a delicate display, while a choice array of large double cream escholtzias have attracted much attention.

In another long narrow bed, with a background of sweet peas of all colours eight or nine shades of penstamen vie with salphiglossis, Clarkias and Sweet Williams, in their attractive colouring. PRESENTATION On the eve of her retirement from the local Exchange, the staff of the Geraldine Post Office assembled for the purpose of saying farewell to Miss Rita Mulhern. In presenting Miss Mulhern with a canteen of fish knives and forks, the Postmaster (Mr L. S. R. King) eulogised the services which the departing officer had rendered during her 13 years w T ith the Post and Telegraph Department. The telephone subscribers all spoke in the highest terms of the service rendered by Miss Mulhem. Mr King congratulated Miss Mulhern on her approaching marriage, and hoped that she would have many years of good health and happiness. (Applause). Messrs J. G. Grierson (clerical) and N. Parkin (linesmen’s department) endorsed Mr King’s remarks. In reply, Miss Mulhern expressed thanks for the gift, and stated that it was with some regret that she was leaving Geraldine. She carried with her nothing but pleasant recollections of her association with the Post Office staff. BOOK YOUR ORDERS NOW FOR XMAS HAMS FOR XMAS HAMS THE FARMERS, GERALDINE
