WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
WAITOHI. At the monthly meeting of the Waitohi Women’s Institute, Mrs Sewell presided over a good attendance of members. Arrangements were made for a social. A demonstration of wreath and bouquet making was given by Mrs Taylor (Temuka) and very keenly watched by all. The demonstrator was accorded a vote of thanks. The competitions, judged by Mesdames McCauley and Taylor (2) resulted. —Shortbread, Mrs J. Lyofi 1,2 and 3. Article from one yard material: Miss C. Crombie 1 and 3, M. Stratford 2. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames D. Connell and J. Lyon and Misses D. Lyon and R. Sewell. GLEN-ITI. At the December meeting of the Glen-iti Women’s Institute, Mrs Winnington presided over a good attendance of members. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Ballantyne, Mrs Arnut and Mrs Tripp in their recent bereavements. The roll call “Where I was born" was well responded to. Mrs J. W. Brown of Glen-iti gave a demonstration of cake icing which was much appreciated. Mrs Catter and Miss Catter, visitors for the afternoon, were welcomed by Mrs Winnington and asked to act as judges of the competitions. The results were as follows:—Christmas gift costing not more than 1/6: Mrs W. Browne and Mrs Phillips equal 1, Mrs L. Clarke and Mrs North equal 2, Mrs McConnell and Miss F. Pearse equal 3. Mrs Pearse’s jumping jack was highly commended. Largest number of peas in a pod: Miss Arras 1, Mrs Ramson 2 Mrs Morse 3. The hostesses for the afternoon were: Mrs Tait, Mrs Hull, Miss Southgate, Mrs Pearse jnr. and Miss Moris Smith.
ARUNDEL. The monthly meeting of the Arundel Women's Institute was held in the Howard Hall, Mrs Pithie presiding. A letter was read from Mrs Rutherford asking Mrs Pithie to make known the annual sale of work to be held in the hall, Peel Forest.
The Christmas party was discussed, and it was decided to hold it on December 21. Mrs Upritchard and Mrs Ashby offered to take charge of the door, and Mr Upritchard to prepare the Christmas tree and bring it to the hall ready to decorate. It was agreed that the money to be spent on presents be approximately the same as last year. It was agreed that a letter be written to Commander Dennistoun asking permission to hold the annual picnic at Peel Forest. The competitions resulted:—-Wool work: Mrs Pithie 1. Jean McDonald 2. Christmas gift: Mrs Charles 1, Mrs Black 2. The judges were Mrs Sim and Miss Bowen. After afternoon tea everyone was invited to view Mrs Johnston’s garden. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Pithie, Patterson, Misses McPhail and L. McComb.
