SCHOOL LEAVING CERTIFICATE
PROVISION MADE FOR ISSUE FIRST EXAMINATION NEXT YEAR By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, December 11 An announcement that during the coming year he intends making provision for the issue of a school leaving certificate was made by the Minister of Education the Hon. R. Masters M.L.C., when opening the new Parnell School this afternoon. He said that the departure would involve no increase in the number of examinations. After a conference with the university it had been decided to hold a school leaving certificate examination in conjunction with, and of the same standard as the present University Entrance Examination <.matriculation). The requirements for matriculation would remain as now, and the papers would still be set by the University. For the purpose of the leaving certificate. however, there would be a further range of subjects of a more or less practical nature such as technical drawing, economics, bookkeeping, shorthand and typewriting, needlework, housecraft, technical electricity, heat engines, applied mechanics, plane trigonometry, pysiology, hygiene and general biology in which papers would be set by the Education Department Candidates for the certificate must pass in English and at least four other subjects and must have completed at least a three years’ course and conformed to certain minimum requirements in English, arithmetic or mathematics, history and science. The Minister said it was hoped that the certificate would not only help to meet the needs of various types of pupils but also become recognised in the business world as a reliable evidence of attainment. The proposal had been vigorously advocated by teachers and approved by the university. The first examination would be held at the end of 1934.
