DAMAGE WROUGHT BY FROST

SOME WHEAT CROPS RUINED TWO COUNTIES SUFFER HEAVILY By Telegrn >h—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH. December 10. Conflicting reports, have been given of the extent of the damage wrought by the frost of a fortnight ago, but an expert examination has been made of the wheat growing areas and it is now possible to give an accurate estimate of the damage. It is now established that though the loss from frost may be a severe, almost a calamitous, blow to some individual farmers, the reduction In yield will be negligible from the national point of view. The total loss will probably not exceed 500 acres of wheat so badly damaged that It will be cut for hay. Other crops have been damaged to the extent of 10 or 12 bushels an acre. Almost all kinds of wheat have been affected. In the Eyre County the autumn sown Tuscan crops on heavy land have been ruined. The damage in crops of Garnet on the Hawarden fiat is so severe that they have been practically wiped out. Autumn sown areas of' Jumbuck wheat are also affected, but the spring .own escaped, probably because the ears were not sufficiently developed. Tannage to wheat crops by frost f t this season of the year is almost unprecedented in the memory of Canterbury farmers.
