KENNEL CLUB FORMED ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING An enthusiastic reception was accorded a proposal that a local Kennel Club be inaugurated in South Canterbury, at a meeting held on Saturday evening in the Tekapo Buildings. Mr F. G. Saville was voted to the chair, and presided over an attendance of more than 30 enthusiasts.

In welcoming those present, Mr Saville extended special thanks to Messrs W. H. Wylie, G. C. Hayhurst, and W, F. Woodward, president, vicepresident and secretary respectively of the North Otago Club, w-ho had travelled from Oamaru that evening to assist in the formation of the local club.

Mr Woodward assured the meeting of his club's support, and explained that a local dog show would be helpful to exhibitors, and would complete the continuity cf South Island exhibitions. The Kennel Club movement was making rapid strides in the North Island, while there appeared more self satisfaction in existing activities in the South Island. He instanced the movement in the North Island, by stating that the A. and P. Association in Hawke’s Bav had spent more than £I,OOO in three years in providing accommodation at its show for the dog sections.

Mr Woodward exhorted the local club to look on the proposal from a community point of view, and not merely as an avenue for the disposal of pedigree dogs. The club would be more successful if the social side of its activities were fostered. He detailed the steps necessary to secure affiliation to the New Zealand Kennel Club, a step which would allow for the holding of one championship show each year, and also two ribbon parades. These parades would prove very popular with dog owners, and would enable likely owners to select the breed that appealed most, and also for experience in parading, a most necessary adjunct to successful exhibiting. The Oamaru Club by parades, had increased its local exhibitors from 12 to 42, and was considered one of the best clubs in the Dominion. He considered that the Club should make immediate arrangements for its first show, and in conclusion, assured the meeting of the wholehearted support of the Oamaru Club. Resolution Carried. A resolution that a Kennel Club, to be called the South Canterbury Kennel Club was carried unanimously, on the motion of Mr W. Smith, and Dr R. D. King. It was further resolved that a Provisional Committee be appointed, to draw up the constitution and rules, and to apply for application, this committee to report to a general meeting of the Club to be held in January. The following members were appointed to act in this capacity:—Dr. R. D, King, Messrs W. Smith, F. G. Saville, A. B. Annand, E. H. Jones, and J. Baird. Mr F. J. Cook was appointed secretary pro tern, on the motion of the chairman and Mr W. Smith. At this stage, congratulations on the step taken were extended by the North Otago officials, who pointed out that the Club would have the alternative of functioning as a separate entity or in conjunction with say the A. and P. Association. One of the+biggest problems the club would be faced with would be the question of suitable equipment, also it would probably find that the better course would be to put in hand immediately the erections of its own show equipment. Membership Fee On the motion of Messrs Smith and Annand, the membership fee was fixed at 5/-, membership to include the privilege of admission of the member”s wife and children under 12 years if age to all shows. At a subquent meeting of the committee, Mr J. G. Saville was appointed convener and chairman, and after various matters had been discussed In reference to the constitution and rules it was resolved to hold a general meeting of members in January.
