NOTES ON THE RACING

Wahnooka. Kotinga-Harvest Dillon, and Mataunga were in most demand for the Trial Handicap, but the favourite was never prominent. Kotinga was in charge from Chudleigh, Renegade and Great Wood after going half a mile, and was first into the straight from Great Wood, Chudleigh and Mataunga. Kotinga and Great Wood fought out the issue, Great Wood, twelfth favourite with £39. winning by a neck. Mataunga was three lengths away, outstaying Chudleigh at the end. Young Travis, considered to be one of the smartest maidens seen out for some time, was a hot favourite for the Improvers’ Handicap, and made amends for his Ashburton defeat by beginning well and trailing the pacemakers until he was asked to go out and win. Prince d’Oro rushed to the front at the end . of half a mile, from the backmarker Margaret Chenault, Happi, Golden 1 Dollar and Young Travis. Golden j Dollar led Margaret Chenault, Happi, and Young Travis to the straight, but j retired over a furlong from home, and Young Travis went on to beat Margaret Chenault by a neck, Happi being three lengths further back. The winner is a smart three-year-old, with a great pedigree at his back. Gay Gordon £406 was nearly twice as well backed as Probationer in the Mace Memorial, but broke at the start and handed away a couple of seconds. War Paint set out to win all the way, from Arabond. and with half a mile to go the leaders were War Paint, Arabond, Ciro, Master Roy. Master Roy caught War Paint half-way down the straight, then Probationer Joined in on the rails, and after a fighting finish, Probationer won by half a length from Master Floy, who was the same distance ahead of War Paint. Probationer u owned by Mrs W. Mackenzie, of Tapanul, who won the New' Zealand Cup with Palantua. In the Bowhill Handicap. Black Jester was installed a £l6 better i favourite than Rey Direct, but again 1 the No. 1 selection broke at the start. , Ayr Lass was responsible for the pace ! until the traight was reached, but Rey Direct ran past her two furlongs from i home. Then Royal Chenault, win had I been well placed all the way, put in ; his claim and won nicely by a length from Rey Direct, . who beat War I Chance by a couple of lengths, j Tangatu was fourth With only five competitors In the New Brighton Handicap. there was

pool. Stanley Bingen £260 and Mr Penalty £206 carried the major investments. Mr Penalty led all the w'ay, and responded w r ell in the straight to a challenge from Stanley Bingen, w'ho trotted a good race from the back mark but suffered defeat by two lengths. Great Burton, w'ho went very unsteadily was two lengths further back. King’s Voyage found the trip too lengthy, and was beaten at the top of the straight. War Buoy was not produced in the Saltaire Handicap, and backers selected War Boat £420 as the next best thing. Prince Author £331 and Lilian BondLord Leslie £228 w r ere the other fancied candidates in a two-dividend pool. War Boat settled his chance at the start, but Prince Author w ? ent to the front and was never headed, eventually getting home by a length from Lilian Bond. Gold Paper, who was disappointed in an effort to get up on the inside, missed second money by half a length. Special Sun was pulled up before going half a mile. Master Roy w r as favourite for the Wainoni Handicap, but there was solid backing for Reporter, Wild Guy, Ciro and Some Guy. Apex, Arabond and Chef all failed to begin correctly. Dusolina led Reporter to the straight, where the Methven gelding headed her. Then Some Guy took charge, but was run dowm by Master Roy and Arabond, Master Roy getting the verdict by a length. Arabond, w'ho pesed a fine race after his bad beginning, w T as a length further back. Erin’s Princess, Denver City, Hollybank, Wild Guy was backers’ final summing up of the mile saddle race at the end of the day. In a close finish for first place, Denver City got home by a neck from Accras. with Erin’s Princess four lengths further back.
