SOUTH CANTERBURY CLUB SUCCESSFUL EVENING MEETING The growing interest in amateur athletics in South Canterbury was fully* evident yesterday r when the third evening meeting held under the auspices of the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club this season, took place at the Rectory grounds. The entries exceeded expectations and the high standard attained in all events made the gathering easily the most successful this vear. A contingent from Waimate helpe*d to swell the entries and provide keener competition. In the mile event McKirdy appeared to have the race won at the beginning of the last lap, but he fell back on entering the straight, and Dobbs (Waimate) and McArthur (Timaru) fought out a good finish. The relay which attracted five teams, was full of interest, and some of the best running of the evening was witnessed, the time being excellent. J. Eaton was largely instrumental in the Timaru team’s victory, with a very fine 880 yards performance. Officials controlling the meeting were: Referee, Mr A. Jackson; supervisor, Mr E. D.
