WEST SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. At the monthly meeting of the West School committee there were present— Messrs T. C. Palliser (chairman), E Laverty, G. H. Fergusson, L. R Breen, R. W. Marshall. J. E. Chiles, J M. C. McLeod J. Dennison. P. Nicol. and the headmaster (Mr H C. Romans). Mr Romans reported a roll of 540 and an average attendance of 510 8 or 94 per cent. The boys and girls of standards 4. 5, and 6 had commenced their seasonal classes in swimming. The germination of seeds in the garden plots had been poor and many plots had had to be resown. This was due to the lack of moisture, and next year it would be necessary to consider having water laid on for use in the garden. The proficiency examination was held on November 15th, but the official results were not yet to hand Seedlings of many annuals had been planted out. and should provide a good display of flowers for next year. Thanks were due to the parents who had sent along plants. The cricket competition was now nearing completion, and the school was in a go<xi position. The dental nurse (Miss Wilson) had been transferred to the Main School, as there was special work to be attended to. Mr Calder was sufficiently recovered to start on December 1. On the motion of Messrs Laverty and Marshall it was agreed that dux medals be awarded to the best girl and boy. The break-up ceremony for the infants is to take place on December 19. and for the senior pupils on the following day. It was left to the headmaster to arrange for speakers. As the meeting was the last for the year the chairman extended seasonal greetings to members of the committee. the headmaster and stafT and to the Press.
