SUNDAY SCHOOL BOYS CONTESTS IN ST. MARY’S HALL A boxing tournament was held in St. Mary's Hall last night, the contestants being drawn from St. Mary's, Ail Saints, St. Michael's, St. John's and St, Peter's Sunday Schools and St. Saviours Boys' Home. For some time I the boys have been receiving tuition, and last night they were afforded an opportunity of putting to use all they had been taught. No fewer than 34 bouts were staged, and most of them proved keen contests, as the boys were fairly evenly matched. The tournament was controlled by members of the South Canterbury Boxing Association, to whom the Rev. D. Thorpe, who acted as announcer, extended thanks. He also thanked the trainers and Drs C. S. Fraser and D. D. Dryden. The officials were: Referee, Mr J. Stewart; judges. Messrs A. N. Oakey and C. Trigg's; time-keepers, Messrs M. McKenna and T. Segar. In the allocation of points, consideration was given to the number of competitors from each Sunday School, The final points were:— St. Mary’s 68 St. Michael's 58 St. Saviour's 53 All Saints 50 St, John’s 33 St. Peter's 25 Results were:— R, Smith (S. At the Leichhardt Stadium, in a contest for the Bantamweight Championship, Blandon (holder), Bst. 2!lbs., gained the verdict over Eagle, Bst. 4Slbs., by a technical knock out in the sixth round of a scheduled fifteen round bout. The contest was willing with Blandon having the best of the argument and Eagle becoming very tired. Billy Townsend, the popular lightweight, and one-time contender for the world championship, announced to-day that he is quitting the ring and sailing to-night for Sydney, where he has secured a position.
