The rain which was heavy in South Canterbury on Sunday night was of a lighter nature at Riccarton, but, still sufficient seriously to restrict the attendance on Derby Day. The weather became worse as the afternoon progressed and broke the long sequence of favourable weather at the Club’s meetings. The track was soft at the opening and became heavy later. Though the attendance was small speculation held up surprisingly well, and the drop on last year’s figures was not so serious as was anticipated. The Derby saw the defeat of the favourite, Red Manfred, by the Washdyke-bred colt Nightly, who finished well after being well back at half-way. Croupier sprang a surprise by his hollow win in the Criterion Handicap, but Ramo was all out to win the Fendalton Handicap from Rocket. Meprisant made a successful reappearance after a year’s absence to win the Epsom Handicap. Nightraids Fill Places. Walton Park, Night Recital and Tea Garden were withdrawn from the High Weight Handicap for which Doiran, Flower and Elude were in most demand. Royal Sceptre led off from Elude and at the far turn the leaders were Royal Sceptre, High Rank, Elude and Doiran. Elude took charge at the top but was headed at the home turn by Nightflier. This pair drew' away from Doiran and Locksley, and Elude won comfortably by two lengths from Nightflier. Nightguard, who was last at the far turn, finished well to get third place three lengths behind Nightflier. High Rank w T as a length further back just beating Doiran. All the placed horses were sired by Nightraid. W. Hogan, rider of Locksley, was suspended for the meeting on a charge of interfering with Nightguard. Great Race by the Juveniles. For the Irwell Handicap, the only four furlong race at the meeting, the Wonderful —Queen of Song bracket was in better demand than Bodyline and Invoice. Bodyline, Wonderful, Queen of Song and Invoice raced for two furlongs almost on terms. Then Queen of Song drew out and won by a good length. There was a great finish for the other places, Bodyline, Invoice and Master Reynard going under the wire with half heads separating them, and Bodyline and Custodian only heads further back. Master Reynard finished fastest of the lot and would have been second in another stride. Croupier Surprises. The soft going was responsible for the scratching of Cricket Bat in the Criterion Handicap. Backers displayed a preference for True Shaft, Silver Streak and Irish Lancer. The Irish horse was disinclined to line up. He was quickly sent to the outside, and W’as four lengths behind the barrier when the start was effected. Croupier led out from Great Star, Cranford, and Hurlingham and at the top Croupier and Cranford were together well clear

of Hurlingham and Irish Lancer. Croupier led into the straight from Cranford and Hurlingham, and quickly opened up a gap of six lengths. Eased up he won by three lengths from Irish Lancer, who beat Hurlingham by two lengths. Spoon was two lengths further back with True Shaft next. Croupier’s win came as a genuine surprise, as he had stopped badly in the Stewards' Handicap and to-day the conditions were most unfavourable for a horse suspected to be suSering from wind trouble. Irish Lancer ran a good race considering his handicap at the start. Nightly’s Derby. The withdrawal of the Masquerader. Guarantee, Falkland and Sweet Agnes reduced the Derby field to six. The race was run in a heavy shower, and was the first Riccarton classic in such conditions for a very long period. Red Manfred 929-508. and Southdown 443280 were the public fancies. Epigram was the first to break the line from Nightly and Silvox, and passing Cutts’s the order was Epigram, Silvox and Passion Fruit. Silvox led to the mile post in 54 4-5 from Passion Fruit, Epigram and Red Manfred, but at the six furlongs the order was Silvox, Southdown, Red Manfred and Passion Fruit. The mile was reached in 1.41 with Silvox leading from Southdown, Red Manfred and Passion Fruit. Into the straight the call was Silvox, Southdown and Red Manfred, but two furlongs from home Red Manfred took charge. He had scarcely got to the front before he was challenged by Nightly who ceme fast from the rear. Although he changed his course in the straight Nightly wore Red Manfred down and teat him by half a length. Southdown was six or eight lengths away, with Silvox three lengths further back. Nightly, who was ridden by the

apprentice, A. Russell, is owned by Mr R. Acton-Adams, but is leased on a purchasing clause by Mr McDougall. He was reared and educated at Washdyke by P. T. Hogan, who raced him before he was transferred to F. D. Jones’s stable. One for Ramo. The Smuggler was the win favourite and second place selection for the Fendalton Handicap, but there was a marked divergence in the figures of Chrysology, who was only sixth choice straight out but favourite for a place. Chrysology was soon out in front from Rocket, Shatter and Minerval, but at the mile was joined by The Smuggler, the pair being three lengths ahead of Rocket and Minerval. Eminent temporarily tok up third position at the far turn, but at the top The Smuggler and Chrysology were attended by Tout le Monde, Rocket and Minerval. The Smuggler led into the straight from Tout le Monde, Minerval and Rocket, but at the false rail Ramo dashed to the front and established a lead of several lengths. He was stopping at the finish but hung on long enough to win by half a length from Rocket, who beat Minerval by a length. Tout le Monde was four lengths back, followed by The Smuggler and Shatter. Ramo was ridden by A. Russell, who scored his fourth win of the meeting. By a Neck. There were eight scratchings for the Randolph Handicap, but a field of 17 was left. In an even betting pool Worship was favourite for a place. High Tor fourth for a win and first for a place, with Copyist and Prostration second and third respectively. Final Shot unseated her rider in her preliminary, and Last Link dropped his rider before the start and galloped down the back stretch behind the scraping sheds. Bon Tray made the pace from Grampian. Top Rank and Prostration and at the top. Bon Tray and Top Rank were followed by Prostration and Knocklong. Bon Tray and Knocklong were first into the straight where Knocklong shot out only to displaced by High Tor. Then Last L. dashed up to beat High Tor by a neck, with Copyist half a length away. Worship finished fast on the rail only a head behind the third horse, with Knocklong, Prostration and Bon Tray all close up. In Heavy Rain. Heavy rain was falling when six starters lined up for the concluding event, the Epsom Handicap. Miladi 707-378 and White Doe 437-348 were in most demand. White Doe led along the Back from Miladi, Ranelagh and Argentic. There was no change at the far turn, but at the top of the bend White Doe was three lengths ahead of Miladi and Argentic, with Meprisant next. White Doe led Argentic and Meprisant into the straight, where Meprisant ran to the front and won easily by four lengths from Argentic, who struggled home two lengths ahead of Ranelagh with White Doe a length further back. So ended the most unpleasant day experienced at a Canterbury Jockey Club meeting for many years. HANDICAPS FOR THIRD DAY.
