ROAD SURFACING

EXPERIMENTAL WORK Numerous attempts have been made to build road surfaces out of rubber. Few of these have been successful, due largely to the high cost. In Holland last year a road surfacing material composed of powdered rubber and asphalt was develojed. It is claimed for the new material that it provides a noiseless non-skid surface, which can be used a few hours after being laid.

Iron in the form of blocks was used many years ago for paving streets. The layman may wonder why it would not prove satisfactory for rural roads. Its weight, cost, and the difficulty of securing a rigidity with thin sections prohibit its use. But some method for incorporating it with other materials to produce a substantial pavement may be eventually developed.
