S.C. ASSOCIATION THIRD PARTY ACT The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Automobile Association was held last night. Present—Messrs N. M. Orbell (in the chair), S. G. McClelland, G. A. Bridges. J. Palliser and J. H. Don. Pareora Bridge. The Waimate County Council advised that at the request of the Association. the County engineer would inspect the south approach to the Pareora bridge, and report to the next meeting of the Council. Bay Viaduct. The Timaru Borough Council wrote stating that it had been decided to give four domes a trial for a period of two months, at the foot of Wai-iti Road. Mr Palliser said that big domes had been put in and he had suggested that it might be better to use smaller domes, similar to those in Church Street, so as to lessen the risk to cyclists. ‘‘Third Party Risk Act.” A letter was received from Mr O. Hutchinson, stating that it was his opinion that the time was opportune for some definite action to be taken in an endeavour to have "The Third Party Risk Act" altered or the general law altered to enlarge the scope of the Act, so that dependents of persons killed in motor accidents might receive some benefit from the fund, which now totalled more than £200.000 a year. The Act. as it was framed, had a contributory negligence clause which in many instances, made it very difficult for dependents of perrons killed in motor accidents to establish a claim successfully. There had been several instances of this in Timaru. and no doubt the same applied to the rest of the Dominion. The writer said that it would be interesting to peruse the annual balance-sheet of the operations of the fund, and to see the ratio of the expense. He firmly believed that an alteration to the general law. or an amendment to the present Act. would be distinctly in the public interest, and should be supported by all Associations. The matter was briefly discussed, and it was decided to forward a copy of the letter to the South Island Motor Union, asking for information in the matter. Benefit for Constable. A letter was received from the South Island Motor Union stating that at the annual meeting of delegates, it was decided to join with the North Island Motor Union in making a presentation to Constable Stewart in recognition of his gallant attempt to apprehend a car thief recently in Auckland. In making the attempt, Constable Stewart was seriously injured, and it was doubtful if he would be able to continue his duties. It was agreed that the South Island Associations should contribute the sum of £25. The North Island Associations had already agreed to contribute £SO. It was suggested that the South Canterbury should contribute £2. It was unanimously agreed to pay the amount. New Members. The following new members were elected: Miss E. Harper, Miss G. Gillies, Mrs G. A. Bennett, Miss E. Lee, Mrs A. L. Shears. Mrs B. A. Raymond, Miss I. Mills, Messrs W. Young, J. R. Wright, J. Shortland, J. D. Wraight, C. W. Wood, J. H. A. Ward, W. T. Taylor, L.
