POURING GOODS INTO CHINA
VAST SMUGGLING SCHEME
INTENSE ACTIVITIES OF JAPANESE United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyrigh t (Received October 19. 10.30 p.m.) SHANGHAI. October 18. Smuggling on an unprecedented scale is rampant in the north of China, owing to the strained Sino-Japanese situation. Vast smuggling organisations, operating from Darien and other centres outside the Great Wall, are literally pouring goods into China, through the passes. The largest percentage of the goods are of Japanese origin, which are easily landed since the forcible seizure of the former Chinese customs in Manchuria. The scheme involves little more than changing the labels and giving the semblance of European and American goods, which are finding ready markets in Tientsin. Hankow, Shanghai and other cities.
