STOLE TO GET MONEY FOR LIQUOR. A sentence of 14 days’ imprisonment with hard labour was passed on Daniel Burney O’Neill by Mr C. R. Orr-Walker S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. when he was convicted of the theft on Monday night of one pair ox fishing boots, two overcoats and one pair of canvas leggings, valued £4/2/6, the property of James Richardson. Constable Hogg said accused came from Ashburton and had been drinking about the town until he had come to the end of his resources. He then went to the washhouse of the Shamrock Hotel and took the gear and clothes and attempted to sell them to get money to buy drink. All the articles had been recovered except one overcoat, which the police hoped to find. “It Is a miserable class of thieving which is very’ prevalent and ir hard to detect,'' said the constable. Remarking that it was a bad class of theft when a man stole to get money for liquor the Magistrate sentenced accused to 14 days’ imprisonment with hard labour.
