One of the oldest living white people born in New Zealand is Mrs Mary Gunson, of Otaika Valley, near Whangarei, who celebrated her ninetysecond birthday last week. Mrs Gunson, who is a daughter of the late Mr John Dwyer, of Dublin, was born at Tangiteroria, on October 10, 1841. when the township was a busy centre of the kauri timber industry. When 16 years of age she went with her father to Otaika Valley, and has lived there ever since, with the exception of a few years at Mangapai. Her husband, who was a former member -f the Life Guards, and who saw service in the Maori War with the Second Waikato Regiment, died in 1918, after having for many years farmed the Otaika Valley property. Mrs Gunson is still active and has a splendid memory. •:* *> 4* 4- 4* * 4* 4* 4* 4* *> 4* •> *> **><••:••>* 4* 4* *> •> *!•

Mrs Caldenius, whose husband, Dr C. R. C. C aldenius, of Stockholm University, is carrying on a geological survey of traces of the ice-age in New Zealand, is enjoying her tour of the Dominion. Mrs Caldenius, like her husband, is a Swede and was born in Stockholm and graduated in the university there. Her favourite subjects were botany and zoology, and since her marriage she has become as keenly interested in geological problems as her husband is. Like many Swedish ladies, Mrs Caldenius speaks excellent English. She is a fine speciman of the good-looking, intelligent Nordic type, and is full of animation and charm. The fame of our delicious afternoon and morning teas, and the generosity and hospitality of New Zealand hostesses, have reached Sweden, through the many travellers we have entertained in our Islands. Mrs Caldenius has already sampled for the first time our whitebait, which she found delicious. The next treats to follow for her in our local menus will be toheroa and kumera. She is intensely interested in uor flora and fauna, so different from what she found in Australian during a brief visit to Newcastle. LATEST ARRIVALS.
