TIMARU HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD OF GOVERNORS MEET A meeting of the Board of Governors of the Timaru High Schools was held yesterday. Present—Mr S. D. Mason (chairman', Mesdames D. A. Raymond and B. H. Low. Messrs A. L. Gee, H. H. Fraser, W. Scott, G. Benstead, G. D. Virtue, A. H. Bain, J. J. Dickson, Ross Brodie and Dr. L. S. Talbot. Lady Principal’s Report. The Lady Principal (Miss J. R. Barr) reported that the inspectors visited the schools for two days last week for the purpose of allotting senior free places, examining applicants for higher leaving certificates and classifying members of the staff. Parents’ Day and the annual sports would be held on November 11. The girls had entered enthusiastically into Mr T. D. Burnett's competition, which included cookery, home arts, swimming, essay, music, horse riding, painting and embroidery and first aid. As far as possible the work in the competition would be on view on parents’ day. The report was adopted, and it was decided to forward a letter of appreciation to Mr Burnett for his interest in the school. Application was made by Miss L. F. Stew’art (Girls’ School) for leave of absence of 12 months as from February next. The application was approved, provided a suitable substitute could be found. Rector’s Report. The Rector (Mr W. Thomas) reported that during the absence of Mr Ledingham. Mr R. Dart, M.A., was on the staff. The inspectors had been at the School, and had accepted recommendations for senior free places. The remainder of the boys would sit the usual examination in November. The Inspectors had assured him that regulations concerning the school certificate, to take the place of matriculation, would be brought into force next year. This would mean that greater freedom in choice of subjects would be given to those who did not wish to enter the university, but who asked for an equivalent examination to matriculation. A framed photograph of J. E. Lovelock winning the record mile race In America had been presented to the school by the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. They gratefully acknowledged the thoughtfulness of the Association. For the senior mile, the Old Boys’ Association was presenting a cup to be known as the "Lovelock Cup.” To avoid clashing with other functions, the sports would be held on October 28. The steeplechases would be held on October 19. The Rector brought to the notice of the Board the services rendered by the "relief” group which had been working on the school grounds. Improvements which could not otherwise have been effected for years, had been skilfully carried out by men much interested in the work, and willing to give their help. The report was adopted. Repairs to Buildings. The Director of Education wrote stating that a report regarding necessary repairs to buildings had now been received from the Public Works Department. Certain of the items were not regarded as a charge against endowment income, and the Department desired to know before instructing the Public Works Department to carry out the work, whether the Board was prepared to meet the cost of these works. The report was approved. Metalwork Equipment. A letter was received from the Director of Education advising that a grant of £320 for metalwork equipment had been approved in connection with the building which the Board had undertaken to erect. The final approval of the workshop was left to the finance committee. Terms and Vacations. The Education Department forwarded a copy of draft regulations which it was proposed to issue under the authority of Section 11 of the Education Amendment Act, 1932-33. for school terms and vacations.
