DAVIS CUP PROSPECTS
F. J. PERRY'S OPINION. By Telegraor— Press Association WELLINGTON, October 16. The English tennis players, F. J, Perry, H. G. N. Lee and F. H. D. Wilde, also the Australians, A. Quist and D. P. Turnbull, arrived this morning by the Maunganui. They are to tour New Zealand preliminary to visiting Australia. Interviewed regarding the Davis Cup prospects, Perry was of opinion that Britain had a very good chance of retaining the trophy. It would be a big task* for France to regain the Cup, and she would probably rely on Merlin, Boussus and Bernard. The strongest competition next year would probably come from Australia, America and Japan. He did not think Lacoste and Borotra would be able to stage a comeback. "I think it one of the worst things that could have happened to them,” said Perry, when asked his opinion of Vines turning professional. “I should think it will probably be a severe blow to them although probably they will not say so.” McGrath, if he kept going, would oe world’s champion, but he would have to alter his forehand drive and get some pace on it. The English and Australian tennis players were entertained at afternoon tea by the Prime Minister and members of the Ministry. Several officials of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association were also present.
