BASKETBALL

PLEASANT POINT CLUB DINNER TO WINNING TEAMS HELD The Pleasant Point Basketball Club held a dinner for the teams, followed by a ball in the Town Hall. Miss A. M. Mcßean, president of the Club, presided at the dinner and present by invitation were Mr J. C. Hayhurst, president of the South Canterbury Basketball Association, Mr H. F. Christie, president of the Temuka and District Sub-Association, and Miss E. L. Grigg, a member of the Temuka Sub-Association executive.

In proposing the toast of the South Canterbury and Temuka Associations, Miss Grigg said she thought all realised the credit that was due to the administrators of the game. South Canterbury had made good progress in the last year and had a bright future. Temuka had been the means of having the new parent body formed. It was a tribute to the organising ability of the officials, that they had controlled games involving as many as 200 players on each Thursday. In response Mr Hayhurst said the progress of the Pleasant Point Club in the last season was a thing to be admired. He prophesied that by next season a club would be developed that would be a force in Temuka basketball. He also congratulated the seniors on winning the Temuka School Tournament and the juniors on winning the local junior championship. Mr Christie said that although a past president of the Point Club he was endeavouring to be fair to all clubs os president of the association. Undoubtedly the teams owed much to the excellent coaching and interest cf their president. “The Teams” was the toast proposed by Miss Mcßean and responded to by Misses S. Christie (senior) and D. Kilberg (junior). Miss Mcßean said she had had some very fine material in the club, and she was indeed proud of the teams’ successes. It had been a pleasure to work with the girls, and she hoped for their sake that they would have just as successful a season next year.

Miss A. Roberts, in proposing the toast of “The President,” paid a tribute to the organising ability and enthusiasm of Miss Mcßean. Undoubtedly the club had been fortunate in the personnel of its players, but without careful coaching the results would not have been so pleasing. She hoped that their president would continue her interest in the club for many years io come. Miss Mcßean responded. At the conclusion of the dinner, the opportunity was taken to present the president with a pair of motoring gloves from the senior team, and a framed photograph of the winning juniors from the junior side. Mr Christie, as an ex-president of the club, was also the recipient of a present from the players.
