VIADUCT TRAFFIC DOME.

To the Editor of “ The Timaru Herald ” Sir,—l have been watching your paper for nearly a week to see if no one would enter a protest against any alteration of the position of the traffic dome at the Bay Viaduct. So if you will kindly allow me space, I for one will protest, as I consider it has given every satisfaction for nearly five years without a single accident. Previous to that, several accidents occurred at that intersection. Some one has been indulging in correspondence to solicit help to uphold their opinion. According to Councillor Hall, Mr Barrett said that the dome was in the right place, that if it had to be shifted. But why should any notice be taken of Mr Barrett’s if. If Mr Barrett had considered that the position of the dome was wrong, he would not have told the traffic inspector to keep his suggestion about curved lines up his sleeve. Our own local traffic inspector knows better than Mr Barrett, the needs of the various intersections for safety as the greatest proof of this is that no accidents have occurred at these intersections since the domes were placed there. If a certain councillor has lost confidence in the traffic inspector, I have every confidence in him, although not a councillor. I have passed that dome more times than any of them, and I maintain that the dome is in the best position for the safety of the public.—l am, etc., EVANS STREET RESIDENT. Timaru, September 17.
