WAIMATE
THE WEATHER. The rain which commenced at 1 p.m. on Friday totalled 33 points, making a (all o( 71 points since the breaking of the weather the previous day. A frost of seven degrees was registered on Saturday morning. BOROUGH BY-ELECTION. The only nomination so far received for the extraordinary vacancy on the Waimate Borough Council caused by the death of Councillor C. T. Hodges was lodged on Saturday. Mr Stanley G. Reid, accountant, Shearman Street, Waimate, being nominated by Messrs Q. F. Richardson and H. C. Foster. Earlier in the week Mr G. J. Shackleton was approached by a strong deputation with a view to securing his nomination, but he found it impossible to accede to the request. CRIBBAGE. The fortnightly cribbage match between teams representing the Waimate Acclimatisation Society and the Citizens resulted in another win for the Society by 13 games. Flaherty and A. linkster 6; totals, Society 69, Citizens 56. ODDFELLOWS’ LODGE. At the fortnightly meeting of Loyal Heart of Friendship, No. 5859, M.U., 1.0.0. F., Sister E. Dunstan, N.G., presided. P.P.G.M. Bro. J. Martin gave a report on the working of the district, particularly at Geraldine where the Order was making good progress. The District Secretary intimated that the half-yearly meeting would be held at Geraldine, and apologised for the absence of P.P.G.M. Bro. Goodall, secretary of Loyal Timaru, who is in hospital. A motion of sympathy with Bro. Goodall was passed with best wishes for a speedy recovery. Mr E. Cholerton, proprietor of the well-known firm of John R. Procter’s, the Premier Opticians, Christchurch, having lately returned from abroad, will be making another professional visit to Waimate on Saturday, October 21.
