ILLEGAL TRAFFIC
EXTENSIVE TRADE IN OPOSSUM SKINS United Press Association—By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, August 17. Local detectives, working in conjunction with Scotland Yard, have unearthed extensive illegal traffic in opossum skins, which have been shipped to London either as rabbit or fox skins, secreted in wool bales. The slaughter of opossums is prohibited in New South Wales, and heavy fines are provided. The detectives estimate that as a result of their investigations of the books of certain firms in Sydney, at least 100,000 skins have been shipped overseas surreptitiously since 1931, the value of which, despite the depressed market, is in the vicinity of £30,000. Evidence has been procured that motor lorries brought the skins from the country to the City by night to an organisation run on systematic lines. The Customs confiscated 60,000 opossum skins, valued at £30,000 shipped from Sydney.
