SOUTH ISLAND MOTOR UNION
HAAST PASS ROAD FAVOURED. AUCKLAND'S PLAN OPPOSED. By Telegraph-Press Association DUNEDIN, June 25. The quarterly meeting of the South Island Motor Union was held here last night, Mr F. W. Johnson (Christchurch) presiding over a full attendance of delegates. Remits mostly dealing with routine matters were considered, and the following, by the Otago Club, was carried unanimously:—“That the Union approves of the work of forming a road ovefl the Haast Pass immediately, as this route will form a necessary link between Otago and the West Coast, and that as the work will provide suitable employment for a large number of men with a minimum outlay for material, the matter be taken up with the Unemployment Board with a view to early commencement of the work.” On behalf of the executive, Mr Carey moved: “That this meeting disapproves of an Automobile Association or club assuming a name that would tend to indicate that it is the governing body.” Mr Carey said the executive considered this was an improper procedure. Mr Haigh seconded the motion.
The chairman (Mr Breen) said the executive objected to the Auckland Association terming itself the Automobile Association, and giving the impression that it was the governing body of motoring in New Zealand. As a counter to this, a body of Christchurch motorists had formed an organisation which they registered with the name of New Zealand Automobile Association, and he suggested that the Otago and Southland Associ-. ation should submit the names of members to form a Council.
Mr E. J. Anderson said he thought the Executive should go further, and investigate Auckland’s right to register a name that had nothing distinctive about it.
The motion was carried. After the matter had been further considered in committee, it was decided to endorse the Executive’s action in support of the new Association, and Messrs Breen (Dunedin), Palliser (South Canterbury), Westey (Southland), Jenkins (North Otago), Furniss (Marlborough), and Dr Gibb (Nelson) were nominated as members of the new Council.
