Bonfires are blazing on 1500 hills and mountain tops throughout Austria. Those in the vicinity of Germany illuminated the words: “Hail! Austria!” Guns are firing salutes. This constitutes part of to-night’s great patriotic demonstration, intended to show the Nazis that Austria cannot be intimidated. “If we are driven to it, he who takes life shall pay with life,” declared Dr Dollfuss, indicating the possible introduction of the death penalty when addressing a crowd of 12,000. He added: “We have restored faith in the Austrian' Fatherland.” Several more Nazi leaders have been arrested, including seven deputies.
