WEST INDIES TEAM IN ENGLAND

OPENING OF FIRST TEST MATCH

PLAY INTERRUPTED BY RAIN United Press Association —By Electric Telegrap: —Copyright (Received June 25, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, June 24. The cricket Test match, England v. West Indies, was commenced to-day at Lords. The weather was dull. Rain twice stopped play during the morning, and prevented resumption after lunch. Fifteen thousand attended, and as the minimum charge for admission was 2/-, it was a costly morning’s cricket. THE TEAMS. The teams are as follow: England. D. R. Jardine (Surrey), captain. H. Sutcliffe (Yorkshire). C. F. Walters (Worcestershire). W. R. Hammond (Gloucestershire). M. Leyland (Yorkshire). L. E. G. Ames (Kent). H. Verity (Yorkshire). M. J. Turnbull (Glamorgan). G. O. Allen (Middlesex). R. W. V. Robins (Middlesex). G. G. Macaulay (Yorkshire). L. F. Townsend (Derbyshire), 12th man. West Indies. G. O. Grant (Trinidad), captain. C. A. Roach (Trinidad). I. Barrow (Jamaica). G. Headley (Jamaica). E. L. G. Hoad (Barbados). O. Da Costa (Jamaica). C. A. Merry (Trinidad). E. Achong (Trinidad) E. A. Martindale (Barbados). H. F. Francis (Lancashire League). H. C. Griffith (Barbados). THE PLAY. The Australian Press Association's special representative at Lords says: “Without Constantine, whom the Nelson Club refused to release, the West Indies had the misfortune to lose the toss. Walters (Worcestershire captain), playing his first Test match, partnered Sutcliffe on an easy wicket. The fast bowlers, Martindale and Francis (the latter borrowed from the Lancashire League), kept the batsmen quiet for the first half hour, but after rain had caused twenty minutes’ adjournment, a slippery ball rendered the bowling ineffective and scoring considerably easier. Walters played neatly and confidently, timing the ball well. “Rain again commenced at 12.40, causing a long delay. “The King arrived during the rain and conversed with the players. “Rain continued during the afternoon, and play was abandoned at 4.30. The bowling thus far has been orthodox, with packed slips. The ball rarely rose high.” Following are the scores: ENGLAND. First Innings. Walters, not out 21 Sutcliffe, not out 19 Extras 9 Total for no wickets .. .. 43
