WIDE AREA DEVASTATED. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright WINNIPEG, June 22. Nearly 2,000,000 acres of the Manitoba wheat fields, extending over a wide swath through the Red River Valley and over 100 miles across the southern part of the province are threatened with destruction by swarms of grasshoppers. Government officials stated to-day that the movement of large winged hoppers developed suddenly. They started from the grasslands and summer fallow, into the fields of fresh new grain, late seeded crops suffering particularly.
Farmers are alarmed all the more because.. the poison bait supplies are exhausted.
