OBITUARY.

NONAGENARIAN DIES. The death occurred at his residence, Short Street, Ashburton, of Mr James Copland, in his ninety-fourth year. Mr Copland was for many years a well-known and successful farmer in the Chertsey district. He was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, in 1839, and was brought up to agriculture. In 1866 he came to New Zealand in the ship Blue Jacket, landing at Lyttel'on. Shortly after his arrival he went to Cheviot and for two years worked for the Hon. W. Robinson. Subsequently he removed to Weedons, where he conducted a threshing plant for several years, and later he took up farm.' ig. Eighteen months afterwards he purchased the well-known Tillyfour f~.rm at Chertsey, where he remained until sixteen years ago, when he retired and went to live in Ashburton.

Mr Copland took an active interest in local body affairs and was a former member of the ?~akaia Road, domain and Cemetery Boards and of the Chertsey School Committee, He was a member of the Ashburton A. and P. Association. It is primarily through the efforts of Mr Copland that the Canterbury Frozen Me * Company "r 1 - blished a branch at Fairfield. He was an adherent of the Presbyterian Church and contributed largely to its funds. Mr Copland married in 1876 a daughter of the late Mr of Cust. He is survived by h ! wife, seven sons and four daughters. A twin brother of deceased (Mr A. Copland) died at Timaru eighteen months ago.
