GERALDINE

THE WEATHER. Conditions were milder yesterday, eight degrees of frost being registered at the Primary School. Bright sunshine continued, but conditions became misty in the late afternoon.

HOCKEY. Ladies’ Game. Although the Geraldine ladies defeated Temuka by two goals to one on Thursday, the team did not put up such a good exhibition as usual. K. Dermondy scored the two goals for Geraldine. The referees were Messrs H. J. Bowkett and H. Cowie. Southern v. Northern. The Geraldine Men’s Southern team defeated Northern by two goals to one, Bryant and Weaver finding the goal for the former, and R. Hayes scoring with a beautiful shot for the latter. The standard of play is improving, but a number of the players gave far more infringements than was necessary, frequent “sticks” being a noticeable feature of the game. Several of the players indulged in unnecessary talking and appealing. GOLF. Stroke Competition. The following were the best cards returned in a stroke competition played on the Geraldine District Golf Club’s links on Thursday afternoon:—

MCClure, president of the Geraldine R.S.A. who was a delegate to the annual Dominion conference, has returned from Wellington. Miss Francis, Ashburton, is the guest of Mrs M. Anderson, Macdonald Street. WOMEN’S DIVISION. The monthly meeting of the Geraldine branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, was held in the Town- Hall supper room. The president (Mrs M. Burdon) presided over a good attendance. After the business was disposed of, Miss Westgarth (Timaru) gave an interesting demonstration on the making of mats, and displayed several handsome finished samples as well as some in- the course of construction. The president thanked Mrs Kelman for bringing the demonstrator, who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Several of the remits and new rules, which are to go before the Dominion conference in July, were discussed. Mrs R. McLeod and Miss McLeod were hostesses for the afternoon, and Mrs J. A. McLean, Mrs H. Hill and the Misses McLean were in charge of the sales table. “GIRL CRAZY.” “Girl Crazy,” a musical extravaganza, featuring Wheeler and Woolsey, will head the programme at the Municipal Theatre this evening. The picture boasts a stellar cast in support of the “star” comedians, with Eddie Quillan, Mitzi Green, and Dorothy lee. The three “star” comedians, Wheeler, Woolsel and Quillan, frolic to new comedy heights in this all-star musical melange. Ranging from the good old form of merrymaking to subtle humour the trio forms a hilariously happy combination in a story of music interspersed with dainty damsels, villains, cowboys and coloured orchestra. The supports include a gazette featuring the deadly bowling of Larwood in the third cricket test. NOTES. The Fire Brigade will hold a Shipwreck Ball in the Town Hall on July 6th.
