MEAT CONSUMPTION.
Although figures are not available for many countries, there are some striking contracts in the amount of meat consumed by the inhabitants of the various countries. Australia and New Zealand consume nearly 2501 b. of meat per head each year, mainly beef j and mutton, and for the United Kingdom. the Un.ted States and Canada, j the quantity is rather less than 1501 b. j per head, of which pork accounts for { more than 801 b.. and beef for 601 b. in ! Canada and the United States, but beef for 701 b.. pork for little more than | 401 b., and mutton for 301 b. in the United Kingdom. Germany eats more : pork than beef, France more beef than i pork, and neither any considerable I quantity of mutton, their aggregate j consumption of all meats being approximately 1101 b. and 901 b. per head. There are 150 different species of shark to be found in the seas and the big rivers of the world. The average length of a shark is Bft„ but monsters of 45ft. in length have been caucht. I
