JUSTICES OF THE PEACE

MORE WORK FORECASTED. MINISTER’S NEW SCHEME. By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH. June 8. Reorganisation of Magistrates Courts in New Zealand, to bring them more into line with English practice, is contemplated by the Minister of Justice (Hon. J. G. Cobbe). To-day the Minister told the executives of the Canterbury Justices of the Peace Association that he was conducting an investigation which might result in their services being called on much more frequently. “I am afraid that out here we do not make full use of our Justices of the Peace,” said the Minister. “At Home, a stipendiary magistrate is very seldom a lawyer. He is usually a returned soldier, and the bulk of the work is done by Justices of the Peace who are on the bench with him. I have been wondering whether we could do a little in this direction in New Zealand. I have already consulted one or two prominent men on the question whether we could not make greater use of Justices of the Peace. After all they have good common sense and business knowledge and those are the main things.” Mr Cobbe said he proposed to go further into the matter with Mr Dallard, Under-Secretary for Justice.
