Mr W. G. Gallagher, of Ashburton, was elected chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board. Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., will be deputy-chairman. Mr E. G. Kerr, South Canterbury director of the Perpetual Trustees Estate and Agency Coy., left yesterday to attend the annual meeting of the Company in Dunedin. A Press Association message from Wellington states that Mr L. A. Paish, H.M. Trade Commissioner for New Zealand, who has been abroad for the past twelve months, will return to Wellington on Monday. While in the British Isles, Mr Paish gave 500 interviews to firms interested in New Zealand trade. After unbroken service on the staff of “The Timaru Herald” since leaving school, Mr C. E. Hassall has tendered his resignation as sub-editor, a position he has filled for about 10 years. His resignation will take effect from the beginning of August. For a quarter of a century, Mr Hassall has been also a contributor on sporting and athletic topics, and is regarded as one of the best informed authorities in the Dominion on sporting matters. His desire to be relieved of the strain of continuous night duty has resulted in his decision to relinquish his subeditorial duties. Mr Hassall’s sendees will not, however, be altogether lost to “The Herald,” as he will remain on the staff as a special sporting writer.
