OBITUARY

MRS G. BATTY. A link with the early days of South Canterbury, in the person of Sarah, wife of George Batty, of Orari, passed away recently. The only daughter of the late Mr W. Booker, she was born at Cochelford. Gloucestershire, and accompanied her father and mother and their family when they came to New Zealand in 1834, in the railing ship “Cathcart,” under Captain Crawford, the trip being made in the fairly smart time of eighty days. Landing at Lyttelton, the family shortly afterwards travelled south to Geraldine, by rail as far as Ashburton and thence by coach. In 1831, Miss Booker married Mr George Batty, at Oamaru, and after living for a short time at Temuka, Woodbury, and Winchester, the young couple settled at Orari, where they lived for the past forty-seven years. Of a kind and loving disposition, the late Mrs Batty was highly respected by all who knew her. and her many acts of kindness and generosity will long be remembered by a large circle of friends. She was an active woman, and although 72 years of age. continued with her activities up to a short time before her death. She is survived by her husband, five daughters, Mrs T. Austin (Orari), Mrs T. H. Loach (Timaru), Mrs A. G. Loach (Geraldine), Mrs C. Colville (Tinwald), Mrs W. Berry (Temuka), and two sons, Messrs E. G. Batty and P. Batty (both of Christchurch). One son, Charles Batty, of Dunedin, predeceased her. A NELSON PIONEER. By Telegraph—Press Association BLENHEIM, May 15. The death has occurred of Mr Henry Hammond, of Fairhall, aged 92 years, one of the original Nelson pioneers. He reached Nelson with his parents in the ship Lord Auckland, in February, 1842, and spent his boyhood in Nelson. He took up land in Marlborough in 1870, and was a very widely respected resident. He is survived by a family of sons and daughters,, Messrs W. L. and W. H. Hammond, of Fairhall, Mrs W. T. Esson, of Wellington, Mrs H. Boyce, of Fairhall, Mrs W. C. Hammond, of Nelson. Mr Hammond’s death directs attention to the fact that the now sole surviving member of the Lord Auckland’s complement is Mr William Cole, of 88 Valley Wakefield, Nelson, who will be 98 years of age in October next. Deceased was the sole named executor in the will of Thomas Cawthron, founder of the Cawthron Institute. ARCHDEACON ENSOR. By Telegraph—Presr Association BLENHEIM, May 15. The death occurred at Waikawa, Picton, of the Ven. Archdeacon Harold Edward Ensor, formerly Archdeacon of Akaroa, and before that In charge of several cures In Canterbury. He has been a complete invalid since 1909. He is survived by his widow, and one son, Edward Ensor, of Rydal Downs, Canterbury, Mrs Reginald Pearey, of Grove, and Mrs C. L.
