WOMEN’S DIVISION

CLANDEBOYE BRANCH. At the first annual meeting of the Clandeboye branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, there was a good attendance. Annual Report. The annual report stated that the first year of the Division had been a very happy and profitable one. Not only had the branch concluded with a satisfactory financial balance, but its membership had grown until nearly every family in the district was represented. The Division was providing a means of social intercourse, which otherwise would not be possible, and also a series of interesting and instructive lectures and demonstrations. The thanks of members were due to all demonstrators, and to members of sister branches who were so generous in the time and advice they gave. A successful social evening was held in November, when a large attendance of people from Clandeboye and other districts was present. Competitions held monthly during the year resulted in Mrs Mulligan being first, Mrs Adair second, and Miss Goodson third. Thanks were due also to Mrs Evans, president of the Timaru Branch, for her splendid help in starting the library; and to other Branch members for donations of books. The Division had a fine library cupboard, and a large number of books. The report thanked Mrs Mulligan for her help as secretary and treasurer; also members of the committee and to all members for the interest in the Branch. Thanks were also due to the Clandeboye Hall Committee for their help in letting the hall each month at so reasonable a charge. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs Bolderston; secretary and treasurer, Miss E. Livesey; librarian, Miss N. Liddle; committee. Mesdames Drake, Dunn, Dobson, Mulligan, Adair, Liddle, and Henderson. The retiring president and vice-pre-sident, Mesdames Dunn and Drake, thanked Mrs Buchan, who was present, for the help she had given them during their term of office. Mrs Buchan suitably replied. Discussion took place on the matter of a birthday party. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the retiring officers, after which afternoon tea was served by Mrs and Miss Sherriff and Miss Clayton. ARUNDEL. The monthly meeting of the Arundel Women’s Institute was held in Howard Hall on Thursday last. Mrs Pithie presided over an attendance of 38 members and visitors. Miss Dorothy Edwards was elected a member of the Institute. A letter was read reminding the Institute of the Annual Conference to be held in Christchurch on 26th and 27th of July.—Mrs Wooding proposed that Mrs U-Pritchard be asked to attend it. This was seconded by Mrs Johnston, and carried. In the absence of the treasurer, the secretary read the balance sheet from the birthday party, showing a balance credit of £1 2s 7d. Mrs Pithie read an account of the Federation meeting in Geraldine. It was agreed that a special fund be set aside for various calls made to the Institute. Mrs Pithie then introduced Sister Christian, who gave a short talk, and also thanked the Red Cross sub-centre for the support they had given. She spoke on Home Nursing, and it was decided to start a class at Arundel if a sufficient member could be got. Mrs Wooding proposed a vote of thanks to Sister Christian. Mrs Pithie also introduced Miss Tripp, who gave a most interesting talk on Vienna, and showed many pictures. A vote of thanks to Miss Tripp was carried by acclamation. The sales table for the Red Cross fund did brisk business, Mrs Wooding being in charge. A competition for dressed fowl for roasting was won by Mrs W. Ashby, with Mrs J. Charles second. Mrs Inglis judged this competition. Hostesses for the day were Mesdames Black, Ashby, and Misses Bowen and Ashby.
