AUSTRALIA’S DEBTS
PROSPECTS OF LOAN CONVERSION. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received May 7, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON. May 6. Commenting on the prospect of an Australian conversion “The Financial News” says: “The task of the negotiators is to find such an amount as could be placed on the market at 4 per cent., at a reasonable discount, without risk of prolonged market indigestion. It is doubtful whether any effort to deal with, say, all callable indebtedness, carrying a nominal rate over 52 per cent., could satisfy these conditions. So it is evident that any scheme must be in the nature of a compromise that need not prevent Australia dealing with quite a substantial sum.
