PRICE-CUTTING IN BUTTER
BOARD POWERLESS TO INTERFERE. By Telegraoh—Prass Association DUNEDIN. April 24. Referring to the complaint that certain firms handling New Zealand butter were efiuring large quantities on the London market below current values, a local member of the Dairy Board stated that since there was no compulsory marketing, the Board had no say. Certainly forward selling of big holdings would force prices down. However, consignors gave agents definite handling instructions, and it appeared that the Board could not interfere.
A representative of a large selling agency, stated that most of the sensational statements on forward sales were made on behalf of controllists, but he hoped New Zealand had sufficient disastrous experience of a controlled market. Selling agents sold forward when there was an anticipated market drop.
